Franklin, the winner of Best Documentary Film 2024, is an inspiring example of the power of nonviolent resistance to bring about lasting change to protect a world-heritage-listed national park from being destroyed in the early 1980s.
Winner of Best Environmental Film, Rio Pusuno: Meet The Community presents the struggle of the community that depends on the Rio Pusuno as the lifeblood of people, animals and flora in the Amazon. As the river is threatened by dams, its defenders must come to it’s rescue.
Bad River II follows Beau Miles as he packrafts a river so polluted by acid mine runoff that the locals refer to it as “pumpkin soup.” While, the Best Short Film brings us a more lighthearted approach to environmentalism in Whatever Floats Your Goat—showing it’s possible to live in a Sprinter van with two goats, three chickens, a dog and a packraft.

Ecuador is well-known amongst whitewater kayakers as a paradise. Generations of Ecuadorians like Diego Robles have found their life’s passion in paddling and guiding the rivers in their backyard. But a few months after Robles found his favorite river, he found excavators in the river building a dam and diversion that would dry up the Rio Pusuno. He had no idea how bad the situation was until he met the local community.
