Oceans 2021

These six films celebrate the joys, dangers and passion of ocean paddling. Kayak to Alaska’s most remote lighthouse on a mission to protect the ocean from plastic. Join David Gauzens as he paddles out to battle pre-historic fish on the high seas—storms and even capsizing can’t deter him from exhausting encounters with trophy sailfish. Plus: A son reckons with his famous father’s disappearance in Lost at Sea; Casper Steinfath becomes the first person to SUP the treacherous Skagerrak strait solo; and live, breath and dance beneath the moon with the guides of the Salish Sea in this year’s Best Sea Kayak Film award winner.

Watch Trailers

  • The Moondance

Watch kayak guides living and breathing by the dance between the moon and the tide as they experience the bounty of the Salish Sea.

Director: Anne Cleary

  • Skagerrak

Skagerrak follows the preparation of professional standup paddle athlete Casper Steinfath in his attempt to be the first person to paddle from Denmark to Norway. In the winter of 2017, Casper made his first attempt to cross Skagerrak, the ocean strait between the two countries. But with only 12 kilometers to shore, his dream fell apart. A year later, Casper tries to cross Skagerrak once again. This is an inspirational story touching on the dreams, aspirations and desires living inside all of us.

Director: Peter Alsted
Producer: Rebecca Sindal la Cour

  • Decision

This short film will transport you to pristine southeast Alaska waters, bringing you along on a paddling journey with whales, sea lions and otters, while also showing the realities of remote beaches choked with plastic debris and the volunteers working to clean them up.

Director: Beau Gaughran
Producer: Ken Campbell

  • Flotsam

Imagine this: You're paddling a kayak six miles off the Florida coast when a sailfish bigger than you peels off with the fishing line at your rear. This is David Gauzens' day-to-day. A Miami native, Gauzens knows glitz—but he shuns it as part of a small, gritty band of kayak fishermen who forsake flashy boats for utilitarian pieces of plastic to pursue their passion.

Director and Producer: Kjell Redal

  • Kao Talking To Me

This National Park Service film follows a man's love for one of the rarest and most threatened trees in the world. Junior's connection with koa trees on his native island compels him to conserve and honor the spirit of fallen trees that would normally be wasted. His way of using the trees connects him to one of the oldest Hawaiian traditions.

Director and Producer: David Ehrenberg

  • Lost at Sea

An epic tale of the sea told through one young man's personal journey to understand his father, who died while rowing the Pacific Ocean.

Director: Johnny Burke
Producer: Louis Bird
Executive Producers: Alex Cooke, Harry Lansdown
